The Navigator Brief: Get Cited, Not Just Ranked

    By Business Navigators ·

Ranking tenth on Google still put you on the page. Being tenth in an AI model's opinion puts you nowhere. What changes when buyers ask a model instead of a search bar.

The Navigator Brief: Get Cited, Not Just Ranked

For twenty years the goal was a spot on page one. That goal is quietly being replaced.

When a buyer asks an AI assistant "who helps professional services firms build pipeline for six-figure engagements", the answer is a short list, sometimes a single name. There is no page two. Either your business is in the model's opinion or it is invisible to that buyer.

    Three acronyms, one job

    • SEO gets you ranked for a query.
    • AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your page chosen as the direct answer.
    • GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business cited inside an AI-written response.

They stack. You still need to be crawlable and credible. But the last step, being the source a model reaches for, is decided by different things than a backlink count.

    What models reward

Clear claims stated plainly. A model cannot cite a paragraph that hedges. Say what you do, for whom, and what changes. One sentence per idea.

Structure it can parse. Headings that match the question a buyer would ask. Tables for comparisons. Short definitions near the top of the page.

Consistency across the web. Your site, your LinkedIn company page, your profiles and your articles should describe the business the same way. Conflicting descriptions lower confidence, and low confidence means no citation.

A machine-readable copy. We now publish every article and Journal issue as a clean Markdown twin alongside the page, with structured data on the page itself, so crawlers and models read the substance instead of guessing from the layout.

    A quick self-check

    QuestionIf the answer is no
Can a stranger say what you do after reading two lines of your homepage?Rewrite the opening
Does each service page have a plain definition, a "who it is for" and an outcome?Add them above the fold
Do your LinkedIn page and your website describe the business identically?Fix the one that drifted
Is there a page that directly answers the top three questions buyers ask you?Write it this month
Being ranked gets you seen. Being cited gets you chosen.

    Where to start

Pick the one question a buyer asks you most often. Write a page that answers it in the first paragraph, expands it with a table or a numbered list, and links to the evidence. That single page does more for AI visibility than a dozen keyword posts.

The longer version, with the technical setup we use on our own site, is in SEO, AEO and GEO: how to get cited by AI search.
